THE PRACTICAL TAKEAWAY
Start here.
Start with a repeatable question set and an observation log. A single answer is a snapshot, not a reliable measure of market visibility.
Choose a decision before a metric
Write down what the measurement should help you decide. Perhaps you want to know which questions your content leaves unanswered, or which resources deserve an update. That decision determines what you record.
Google says its established SEO practices also apply to AI Overviews and AI Mode. There is no special AI markup requirement. Check that the page is indexable and useful before treating an absent citation as an isolated optimisation problem.
Keep the question set consistent
Choose a small set of real questions from customer conversations, site search and sales objections. Include questions about the category, comparisons and practical implementation. Use the same wording when repeating the exercise.
- Record the question, engine, date, locale and any visible model or search setting.
- Save the answer and the exact destination of every relevant source link.
- Distinguish a brand mention from a citation and from a recommendation.
- Repeat observations and record variation rather than selecting the most flattering result.
Connect the observation to your site
For each cited page, inspect the reader question it answers and the evidence it makes available. Compare that with your own relevant page. Look for a concrete information gap, such as an unexplained process or a claim without a source.
Google reports traffic from its AI features within Search Console’s Web performance data. A manual answer log and website traffic measure different things. Keep them separate and use them together to inform your next investigation.
Make one change you can explain
Choose one page and one useful improvement. Add original detail, clarify the answer or strengthen the supporting evidence. Note the change and repeat the same observations later.
This is a proposed measurement framework, not evidence that a particular change causes citations. Results vary, and a small sample cannot establish a ranking mechanism. The useful outcome is a clearer next question.
