THE PRACTICAL TAKEAWAY
Start here.
Use AI to organise public evidence. Keep the decision to contact someone grounded in a specific, defensible reason for relevance.
Begin with a fit hypothesis
State why the organisation might have a problem your work can address. Keep it narrow enough to challenge. A broad industry label is rarely sufficient evidence of a current need.
For example, a newly announced market expansion could justify researching regional operations. It does not prove that the company needs a particular service or has a budget available.
Use a five-part brief
A compact research brief helps a person decide whether a conversation is worthwhile. Collect only information relevant to that decision.
- Company context: what it does and who it serves.
- Relevant change: an announcement or observable development, with a source and date.
- Working hypothesis: what the development might mean for the team.
- Reason to speak: a useful question, resource or practical contribution.
- Unknowns: what still needs to be verified before outreach.
Keep the source attached
Ask your research process to preserve URLs and dates next to the facts. Check the original source rather than relying on an AI-generated summary. A company announcement supports what was announced, not every inference you might draw from it.
Avoid filling an empty field with a guess. A brief with an honest unknown is more useful than a detailed but unsupported account story.
Review before contacting
Read the proposed message from the recipient’s perspective. Is the reason for contact specific? Is the hypothesis presented as a hypothesis? Does the message offer something useful without pretending to know the recipient’s priorities?
This is a suggested research workflow, not a measured claim about reply rates. Use appropriate public or permissioned information and your organisation’s outreach rules. The goal is a better decision about relevance.
This is an editorial framework, not a report of completed tests or measured results. Sources checked 8 September 2026 where cited. Our evidence standards. To flag a correction, send the statement and source.
